Fare Enough!!

A Chicago Fare and his adventures...
December 01

Slippery Saturday...

It’s  rather obvious I didn’t read a calendar when I started this blog. Since December 1 is a Saturday, I won’t be riding in any cabs today…

Saturdays are usually reserved for chores but this particular Saturday finds the entire Chicago area under the grips of a severe winter storm. So the only chore I accomplished was going to the grocery store and even just that little trip found me sliding sideways down the icy road.

I was sliding not because I do not know how to drive on ice but because the person in front of me did not know how to drive on ice. My granddad taught me that when driving on ice you focus on where you want the car to go, don’t look at what you are trying not to hit.

Which, I think, is a pretty good life-analogy.

If you are constantly trying to avoid the bad things you aren’t trying to attain the good things. For example, if Superman spent all his time trying to avoid Kryptonite he would miss the little old lady that was about to get hit by the crosstown #2 bus.

I know that’s a silly example… everyone knows there is no such thing as Kryptonite but you get the point…

7000 to go...

If the weather in Chicago was controlled by a switch it wouldn’t be one of those dimmer switches like on a fancy chandelier, it would be a regular switch with only two positions: “Hot” & “Cold”

For that reason, when we moved our office from a Chicago suburb to the River North area of Chicago and I realized I had a mile and a half walk from Union Station, I decided that walking wasn’t really an option for me. Being hot and sweaty upon arrival at the office is not a good way to start the day and getting walking pneumonia is only good if it’s accompanied by the Boogie Woogie Flu.

So I ride in at least two Chicago Taxi’s every day…

After a few rides I began to notice the taxi number on just about every panel of the car matched the license plate. Upon commenting about this to one of the cabbies he informed me that it also matched the “medallion” that is riveted to the hood.

If you get to know me, you will find that my brain works in mysterious ways which is why I had to find out more about these medallions. I discovered that the city of Chicago has just 7000 of these medallions and you must have one to legally run a cab in the city. Obviously, they are almost impossible to get and I have heard that they sell for $125,000 and sometimes more.

Next thing I knew, my cab rides found me playing a game to see what the highest numbered cab and the lowest numbered cab I could find were. Currently it stands at 6946 for the highest and number 2 is the lowest. That soon got kind of boring and I think more than one cabbie thought I was some sort of weirdo when I kept mumbling numbers to myself in their backseat.

So the game changed to see what the highest and lowest ones I could ride in would be. And shortly after that I began to think that I should keep track of the cabs I ride in to see if I can ride in all of them. That’s how this blog came to be. I have always been a person who notices strange things and I love to write about them and certainly in downtown Chicago there are some crazy things to see during these cab rides. This blog will be the place where I track my progress as a Fare (cabbie-speak for people who ride in the back) through the taxis of Chicago.

Starting December 1st I will make a daily entry about the cabs I ride in each day and my experiences during the ride. Hopefully you will join me during my life as a Chicago Fare…
